Her story is of grit and determination. Unable to bear a child, she wanted to commit suicide. After that, she devoted her whole life to planting trees. She battled the arid conditions of south India to plant 300 trees. She also planted hundreds of banyan trees with her husband and also got awards in Los Angeles. She has received numerous awards and has a foundation named after her named ” Sallumarada” meaning “row of trees”. She says, she treats plants as her children and receives blessings. The couple adopted a son named Umesh who is passionate about conservation.
She was an illiterate farm labourer from Karnataka went out of her way when society outcasts people who are infertile. Thimmakka’s Resources, a U.S. environmental organisation based in Los Angeles for Environmental Education is named after her for her noted works. National Citizen’s Award of India has honoured her work. She was conferred with Padma Shri in 2019 and her work was recognized by the Government of India.


Thimmakka was born in Gubbi Taluk, Tumukuru District in Karnataka. She was married to Chikkaiah, from Hulikal village in the Magadi Taluk district in Karnataka. She received no formal education and was illiterate and worked as a casual labourer in a nearby quarry. They both couldn’t have children, so devoted life to planting trees. The name word Saalumarada (row of trees in the Kannada language); she was referred to because of her achievements and work.

In total, 384 trees were planted, and their asset value has been estimated at around 1.5 million rupees. The government of Karnataka have taken over the management of these trees.

The strict protocol of Rashtrapati Bhavan could not curtail the positivity and motherly instincts of 106-year-old Saalumarada Thimmakka, as she touched the forehead of President Ram Nath Kovind to bless him in a March ceremony.
She has got the nickname of ‘Vriksha Mathe (mother of trees)’ for planting 8,000 trees was honoured along with other personalities at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She planted 400 banyan trees too.
She was dressed in a light green sari, ‘tripundra’ on her forehead, approached the dais to receive the award from President Ram Nath Kovind. With her smiling face, at this age is a sign of positivity.
She found solace in planting trees. Thimmakka has planted over 8,000 trees during a period of 65 years. Her husband passed away in 1991.

so, it was a story of delight where a lady who couldn’t bear a child helped plants to grow and planted 8,000 trees and received the highest honour of Padma Shri for her services. It was that she wanted to do suicide, but she offered her life as a gift to mankind and grew trees which give us shade, relief and so many medicines. Kudos to her and her husband who supported her throughout.
