Sake Dean Mahomed (originally Sheik Din Muhammad) is a Bengal (in the city of Patna which was then under Bengal territory) born entrepreneur who belonged to the nai or the barber caste. Born in May 1759, Mahomed followed his father’s graceful steps and worked for East India Company at an early age. He then joined the British army under British Captain Godfrey Baker. He served there for thirteen long years before leaving to Ireland with his chief.

Mahomed’s Early ages of Entrepreneurship

He had all the intelligence to work on his dreams and believed he could succeed in it. When he knew that he has enough money to start a business, it immediately struck him to start a restaurant which introduces Indian culture to foreign people. He thought about and opened a restaurant named Hindoostane Coffee House, on the west side of London. He introduced cooking with an Indian touch, using bamboos, hookahs, the real Chilm of tobacco. This was a great initiative but it being too early for the Londoners to exploit other cultures, and also counting the competition from local restaurants, the restaurant had to shut down with losses.
He was in his fifties by this time and being financially ill kicked his guts. Then he moved out to Brighton with his family and introduced a new way of a bath. Earlier he earned a background in Indian science before joining the army which he now profoundly and deliberately used it too, to ornate his qualifications. He had the knowledge of Indian oils and herbs and started to use this knowledge to cure diseases such as asthma, paralysis, and rheumatism. The British people had no belief in his treatment methods. He gave free treatment to those who were suffering from the above illnesses and cured them completely out of it. These results were stunning and attracted more of people’s attention.
Mahomed and his wife set up the first industrial “shampooing” vapor masseur bath in England in 1814. He used Indian methods in this vapor bath and named it as “The Indian Medicated Vapour Bath” (a kind of Turkish bath). It stands as a cure for numerous diseases such as rheumatism and paralysis, gout, aged sprains, lame legs, stiff joints,  pains and aches in the joints.
This became most famous as Mahomed’s Baths in East Cliff. They offered Champissage(a head massage as called in the Hindi language), herbal steam baths, and lots of other treatments for various ailments. No doubt he stood out among other competitors by proclaiming and owning his unique method that is the Indian method, which was rare and only he could provide. He described his early days at military and the kind of relationship he shares with the British. He also made a note of all his memories including his travel, experience, and memories of the British army, military campaigns and also about Indian cities. In 1822, he released another writing of his own named “Shampooing or Benefits Resulting from the use of Indian Medical Vapour Bath” which was a tremendous. His recognition did not only benefit him but also developed culture relation between England and India.
